Largo da Porta Nova - Barcelos / Riding Portugal
##### Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
After wandering around the old garden, we went down Avenida dos Aliados and came face to face with Largo da Porta Nova in the late afternoon, at one of those times when the light doesn't usually bother us much, especially when the sky is clear with scattered clouds, and the slight chill forced people to walk with their hands in their pockets. The square opened up before me with a feeling of spaciousness and airiness, light stone pavement, buildings aligned with an old discipline, but with that typical lightness of Barcelos.

Depois de dar umas voltas pelo Jardim velho, descemos pela Avenida dos Aliados e demos de caras com o Largo da Porta Nova já ao fim da tarde, numa daquelas horas em que a luz não costuma prejudicar muito, principalmente quando o céu está limpo, com nuvens dispersas, e o frio leve obrigava as pessoas a caminhar com as mãos nos bolsos. A praça abriu-se diante de mim com uma sensação de espaço amplo e arejado, pavimento de pedra clara, edifícios alinhados com uma disciplina antiga, mas com aquela leveza típica de Barcelos.

What first catches the eye is the church in the center, solid, white, with the tower imposing itself more by proportion than by ostentation. There is something very Portuguese in that combination of sobriety and details, with the clean facade, the stone moldings, the discreet but well-positioned dome. It's not a building that needs explaining. You've been there long enough not to need approval.

O que primeiro chama à atenção é a igreja ao centro, sólida, branca, com a torre a impor-se mais pela proporção do que pela ostentação. Há algo de muito português naquela combinação de sobriedade e detalhe, com a fachada limpa, as molduras de pedra, a cúpula discreta mas bem posicionada. Não é uma construção que precise de se explicar. Está ali há tempo suficiente para não precisar de aprovação.
